Guests ask me the same question every week: when is the best time to come? The honest answer is that it depends on what you want from the trip. I've driven these roads for nineteen years, and every season has a different personality.
Harvest: late August to October
This is Napa at full volume. Pickers are in the rows before sunrise, trucks full of grapes crawl along the Silverado Trail, and the whole valley smells faintly of fermenting fruit. Wineries are busy and energetic, and many offer harvest-only experiences like crush pad tours and punch-downs.
It is also the most expensive and crowded time to visit. Weekend rates are at their highest, dinner reservations disappear weeks ahead and traffic on Highway 29 can be slow in the afternoon. If harvest is the goal, come midweek, book everything early and plan your days around the morning.
- Weather: warm, dry days in the 80s, cool nights.
- Best for: wine lovers who want to see the work behind the bottle.
- Book ahead: 3 to 6 months for rooms, 60 days for dinners.
Winter: November to February
Winter is my favorite secret. The vines are bare, the fog sits low in the mornings and the hills turn a vivid green after the first rains. Tasting rooms are quiet, winemakers have time to talk, and you can often get a table at restaurants that are fully booked the rest of the year.
Rates are at their lowest, and our midweek offer makes it even easier. Bring a sweater, book a cottage with a wood-burning stove and plan long lunches rather than long drives.
- Weather: 40s to 60s, with rain on and off.
- Best for: couples, food lovers and anyone who dislikes crowds.
- Don't miss: the holiday lights in Yountville and truffle season menus.
Spring: March to May
Spring is when the valley wakes up. Wild mustard blooms bright yellow between the vine rows in February and March, then bud break brings the first green shoots. By May the gardens are overflowing, and Alder Table's menu changes almost weekly.
It is a lovely time for cycling and hiking, and a comfortable balance between good weather and reasonable prices. Easter and Memorial Day weekends get busy, so aim for the weeks in between.
- Weather: 60s to 70s, occasional showers early on.
- Best for: outdoor lovers, photographers and first-time visitors.
- Don't miss: the first Saturday cooking classes in April.
Summer: June to mid-August
Summer is long, golden and warm. Afternoons can reach the 90s, but mornings are cool and evenings on the terrace are hard to beat. Families visit more in summer, and the pool becomes the center of the house after lunch.
The trick is to plan tastings and activities early, rest by the pool in the heat of the afternoon, then head out again for dinner. Balloon flights are especially beautiful in summer, with clear skies over the valley at sunrise.
- Weather: 80s and 90s by day, 50s at night.
- Best for: families, groups of friends and pool days.
- Don't miss: outdoor concerts and farmers markets across the valley.
So when should you come?
If it's your first visit and you want the classic postcard, come in late September on a weekday. If you'd like to feel like a local, come in January. If you want green hills and fewer people, try April. And if you want the pool and long evenings, summer won't disappoint.
Whenever you choose, tell us what matters most to you when you book. We'll shape tastings, tables and drives around the season, so you see the valley at its best.
